Compare the purpose and functionality of each type of communication service and record your reflection in your individual blogs.
The three methods of communication I have looked at today are SMS (Short Message Service), email and instant messaging. I am now going to look at each service in term.
Short Message Service (SMS) allows short text messages to be sent between mobile telephones. The most common usage of SMS is person-to-person messaging; however the messages are often used by business to contact customers or employees with marketing or other information, which is similar to email. SMS messages can also be used to cast votes on TV. The main disadvantage is the cost implications as the average price is 10p a text, however, many people to receive free texts.
Instant Messaging is web-based email. To use instant messaging, you do not need any email software - just a computer connected to the internet. Users simply sign up to a portal such as MSN. They are given a unique user name and a personal mailbox on the portal's email server, and they can then send and receive messages via a special web page. All messages are sent and received instantly, like having a conversation. Instant messaging is usually used between two people, however, in recent times you can now connect to a group of friends.
In my group we decided to you use email as our form of communication, this was because we all had access and it is free. In my opinion all these methods work for different purposes, for example a SMS message can only include 160 characters or fewer which includes spaces, which means only a few sentences can be sent. Whereas, an email can be much longer plus you can attach files to them such as documents. In addition, instant messaging is used to have a conversation with your friends over the internet, you cannot send attachments. You are able to send more text than in an SMS message.
